In May 2025, a new cultural and entertainment landmark opened in the heart of Nagoya: IG Arena, officially known as the Aichi International Arena. Located within Meijo Park, this state-of-the-art facility embodies the theme of “tradition meets innovation” with its warm wood-infused design and cutting-edge architecture. From sports to music, from global events to Japanese traditions, IG Arena is poised to redefine live entertainment in central Japan.

A Landmark for All Occasions

Designed as a multipurpose arena, IG Arena accommodates a wide spectrum of events. With a capacity of approximately 17,000 spectators, it is among the largest indoor venues in Japan. Its advanced LED display systems and superior acoustics create a truly immersive environment for audiences.

Accessibility is also a key feature: IG Arena is located just steps from Meijo Koen Station on the Meijo subway line — only 20 minutes from Nagoya Station, making it easy to reach for both domestic and international visitors.

Among its modern amenities are an international food court and multilingual signage, ensuring that travelers from abroad can comfortably navigate the venue.

Sumo in a New Setting: Nagoya Basho 2025

Traditionally held at Dolphins Arena (formerly Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium), the Grand Sumo Nagoya Tournament found a new home in 2025 at IG Arena, due to renovation works at its usual venue.

  • Dates: July 14–27, 2025 (13 days)

  • Highlights:

    • Sold-out seats throughout the tournament

  • Traditional sumo cuisine, including chanko nabe, available on-site

For many fans, watching sumo in this new arena was a historic first. The combination of ancient rituals with a modern architectural backdrop created a uniquely memorable atmosphere. International guests were particularly well accommodated, with English-speaking staff assisting visitors from entry to seating.

Sumo 101: Japan’s National Sport

With over a thousand years of history, sumo is more than just a sport; it is a living tradition deeply rooted in Shinto ritual and Japanese culture. Wrestlers, known as rikishi, compete in a circular clay ring (dohyo), aiming to push their opponent out or force them to touch the ground.

While the rules are simple, the depth of ranking systems (banzuke), training stables (heya), and ceremonial rituals make sumo endlessly fascinating. For many newcomers — including myself — witnessing the intensity and discipline of live bouts can spark a newfound appreciation for the sport. Final Thoughts

IG Arena is more than just a venue — it is a stage where Japan’s heritage meets global culture. My own experience attending the 2025 Nagoya Sumo Tournament here underscored how seamlessly tradition and modernity can coexist. Surrounded by international visitors, I was struck by the growing global fascination with sumo and Japanese culture as a whole.

Be sure to check the event schedule — whether it’s sumo, basketball, a concert, or a global sports showcase, IG Arena is set to deliver unforgettable experiences.
